30 January:
I'm trying to think of "good-bye" and "good night" in Russian and Chinese (I knew them once) and have forgotten. But the last decade has made English more the lingua franca than before and much of its use by non-native speakers is better than those of us who have grown up with it.
The party has been a success. At a commercial level it brought the books to more people in more places who will network than any other method. And this was the first book party.
More importantly, on an emotional level it put me and the other authors in touch with people with whom we share affection but have not seen in a while. When you travel intensively through Russia and China, as well as other places, with business associates and clients, you develop the kind of bond of friendship that reminds me of kids at a summer camp... shared unknown experiences will do that. Things like being with a group during the Russian coup, walking out on government leaders in Africa, sitting on my knees as the honored guest at a Japanese tea ceremony, and Chinese banquets plus machine gun practice come to mind.
The virtual book party brings it all back again. And I saw great questions (those are the ones where you don't have an immediate answer), generosity of the gurus like Walt and Bob to share their thoughts. And Maryann leading us, characteristically, in new directions. And the videos from John, Alexander... among others. Great... thanks for participating in this emerging market technique for selling books.
